Step 5 - Installing the Decoder
If you look closely along the side of the decoder, you will see the word "Rear" etched into the decoder.  The decoder should be oriented so that the word "Rear" is at the rear of your locomotive.
  • Place the wires from the motor out the same side as the two motor connections on the decoder.  Don't attach the wires to the decoder.
  • Fit the styrene spacer over the two black plastic tabs on the motor mechanism.
  • Slip the back hole of the decoder over the black plastic tab at the back and gently push forward on the decoder.
  • At the same time, place the front hole of the decoder on the top of the black plastic tab at the front.
  • Slide the dull back edge of an X-acto knife under the front end of the circuit board until it touches the black plastic tab.
  • Gently press the X-acto knife against the the front tab.
  • At the same time, gently push down on the front end of the decoder next to the hole with your fingers.
  • You want to press in the black plastic tab no more than 1/16 of an inch.
  • As you press in with the X-acto knife and push down with your fingers, the decoder will snap onto the front black plastic tab.
  • Force is definitely not required!
